With Spanish football on its annual winter break, there’s only really one thing being talked about in the Spanish press – the January transfer window. Here are the main stories circulating in the newspapers over the past few days:
The biggest rumour of this window isn’t coming from either Barcelona or Real Madrid, but Atletico Madrid. MARCA reported earlier this month that Bayern Munich had met the Lucas Hernandez‘s release clause of £75m and that the Frenchman has been planning an exit from the Wanda Metropolitano for some months.
The World Cup winner told French paper Le Figaro that the move is certainly on the cards: “I’m happy in Madrid, but if I have to go tomorrow because a project interests me, I would consider it,” he said.
Atletico Madrid CEO Gil Marin has vowed to not let the 22-year-old leave this soon: “We have a very good relationship with Bayern Munich and we’ll meet with them in January to discuss the situation,” Marin told Goal and Spox.
“The player cannot leave in this winter market.
“If the player wants to leave then we’ll speak about it, but for July.”
Another major move being reported is Barcelona’s pursuit of Dutch duo Matthijs De Ligt and Frenkie De Jong. The Ajax youngsters are on the wanted list of several other European clubs, with De Ligt in particular grabbing the attention of the likes of Manchester United and Juventus according to Mundo Deportivo.
Both United and Juve have reportedly made higher offers for the defender than Barcelona at this stage, with the 19-year-old expected to cost around £70m. De Jong, 21, is also expected to go for a similar fee but the Catalan giants face less competition for the midfielder.
Another name on the lips of the Barcelona press is RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner. The German striker is also being tracked by Liverpool and Bayern Munich but, with Barça looking to replace an ageing Luis Suarez, Ernesto Valverde is in the serious hunt for a number nine.
Manchester City’s Brahim Diaz is on the verge of a move to Real Madrid according to MARCA. The 19-year-old could return to his native Spain in the coming days after the two clubs agreed a fee in the region of £15m plus add-ons.
Another Spaniard linked with a move away from the Premier League is Cesc Fabregas. His contract at Chelsea is up at the end of this season and, after limited game time under Maurizio Sarri, the 31-year-old is expected to leave the Blues sooner rather than later. Thierry Henry’s Monaco have emerged as a contender for his signature alongside Milan according to MARCA.
Mundo Deportivo are continuing to fuel the fire of Adrien Rabiot’s move away from PSG. The Frenchman has been frozen out of Thomas Tuchel’s squad having failed to agree terms on a new deal. The 23-year-old’s current contract runs out at the end of this season and Barcelona are the leading candidates to sign the midfielder in January.
Mundo Deportivo are also reporting that Michy Batshuayi’s time at Valencia is coming to an end. The Spanish club want to terminate the loan of the Belgian striker and hand him back to Chelsea after an underwhelming first half of the season. However, the Blues don’t want him back and have tasked Valencia with finding a club to take him.
