Eibar produced arguably the most shocking result of the season so far in comfortably defeating Real Madrid by a 3-0 scoreline. After an already turbulent campaign, pressure is mounting once more on the manager, players and board at the European Champions. The Spanish press were not kind in their assessment of Madrid’s first loss ever at the hands of tiny Eibar.
The frustrated figures of Marcelo, Gareth Bale and Sergio Ramos were accompanied by the headline ‘Un Madrid Vulgar’ (A Vulgar Madrid) on the frontpage of Madrid-based paper MARCA. The tagline dubbed the result a ‘lesson taught by a Mendilibar masterclass’ and claimed Santiago Solari’s side ‘bordered on ridiculous’. Los Blancos were also labelled a ‘lost team’ without attitude.Embed from Getty Images
MARCA also reacted to Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid on Saturday evening, recalling ‘a lot of intensity, little football’ in a tepid game that saw very few clear-cut chances. They described the match as ‘boredom’ until a ‘frenetic final quarter of an hour’ as Diego Costa and Ousmane Dembele netted for either side in the latter stages.
Another Madrid-orientated paper branded the Eibar result ‘Siniestro Total’ (A Total Disaster) above a picture of a despairing Thibaut Courtois following Eibar’s first goal. AS also dub Solari’s side ‘the worst Madrid team in a long time’ after goals from Gonzalo Escalante, Sergi Enrich and Kike ensured an emphatic first victory for Eibar over one of La Liga’s three biggest clubs.
As for Barcelona’s dramatic draw with Atletico, AS claim ‘Dembele earns forgiveness’ after his late equaliser. Dembele had been criticised by his manager and some of his teammates for turning up late to training and his attitude in general.Embed from Getty Images
A bit of tongue and cheek from the Barcelona-based paper regarding Ernesto Valverde’s team’s late equaliser at the Wanda Metropolitano. They went for ‘Dembele, A Tiempo’ (Dembele On Time) following his 89th-minute goal that levelled the scores after Costa’s opener. Dembele has won 7 points for Barcelona this season with his strikes and Mundo Deportivo claimed he had ‘silenced his critics’.
‘Descontrol en el Madrid’ (Chaos in Madrid) accompanied a picture of a struggling Marco Asensio on the front page as the paper praised the performance of Barcelona loanee Marc Cucurella. The left winger created at least two of the goals for Eibar and impressed with his tenacious display.Embed from Getty Images
Another play on words can be found on Sport’s front page as they use Dembele’s tendency to oversleep and miss training in the headline ‘Dembele Despierta Al Barça’ (Dembele wakes up Barça).
Sport also laud Marc Cucurella, describing how he ‘buried Solari’s Madrid’ during Eibar’s 3-0 thrashing of Los Blancos.
